SUPPORT FOR THE AGREEMENT WITH IRAN TO HALT
NUCLEAR WEAPONS DEVELOPMENT
(Sense-of-the-Assembly)

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003, adopted GA-0316 which called for an urgent end to nuclear danger; and

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2009, adopted the Axis of Friendship Resolution (GA-0915) which committed our church to affirming diplomacy for resolving conflicts as an affirmation of our faith in Jesus Christ as a peacemaker and urged our governments “to pursue the path of diplomacy;” and

WHEREAS, the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France, and Germany reached an historic agreement with Iran on July 14, 2015 to halt its creation of nuclear weapons, with inspections to assure its compliance in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions, that created a “balanced deal that means Iran won’t get an atomic bomb[1];” and

WHEREAS, the European Union and United Nations Security Council endorsed the agreement on July 20, 2015, and lifted sanctions, and the U.S. Congress has 60 days to endorse the agreement;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, meeting in Columbus, Ohio, July 18-22, 2015, affirms this international agreement with Iran as a sign of hope for peace and an opening of Iran to the international community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) inform President Obama of this affirmation; and

FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED that the General Assembly urges all members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) who are US voters to write to their Congressional representatives to urge support for this historic agreement.
