GA-1729

REPORT OF THE TIME AND PLACE COMMITTEE

At the 2015 General Assembly, GA-1532, Report of the Time and Place Committee was        committed to the Administrative Committee for further investigation. This action was taken so that a task force would be formed to research alternatives to the current model we are using for General Assembly. Our current model has become financially unsustainable.

The GA Futuring Task Force completed its work and made a report to the General Board during its Spring 2017 meeting.  Due to time constraints on organizing a General Assembly, the conclusions reported by the task force will not affect the 2019 Assembly location brought to the 2015 General Assembly.

The 2019 General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be held in Des Moines, Iowa, July 20-24, 2019.

Our commitment as a church to a world perspective would be greatly enhanced if the General Assembly were held at Toronto in 2021. We are a church in two countries: Why not come to other one? Toronto is a world-class city and the fifth largest in North America. It is a natural that our church would embrace this great city’s multi-cultural environment. The resources for seminars and workshops that could be provided would simply be astounding. The ecumenical posture, racial and ethnic components of Canada provide a model for living that the recent resolutions of the GA have called for.

Toronto, or any other major Canadian city, would reinforce the action of this year’s GA resolution. Looking to the future, there has never been a General Assembly in the Desert Southwest. Hotel rates in Phoenix are much less expensive during the summer. Yes, it gets hot, but the downtown hotels and convention center are all air conditioned
